Installation & Assembly Guide for Poultry Feeder and Drinker

2026-04-23 19:08:44

Below is a practical,step-by-step installation and assembly guide for common poultry feeder and drinker systems. It covers preparation, mounting, leveling, connection, and initial testing. The instructions assume DIY or small‑farm setups(under 500 birds),but principles apply to larger systems.

General Preparation(All Systems)

Read the manual–Different brands have slight variations in clips, seals, and threads.

Gather tools:Drill with bits,adjustable wrench,pipe cutter(PVC),Teflon tape,level,marker,scissors,pliers,silicone lubricant(food grade),zip ties,and a bucket for water testing.

Choose location:Dry,level area away from direct sun(for drinkers)and protected from rain(for feeders).Hang or elevate to bird back height(approx.15–20 cm/6–8 inches for adult chickens).

Pre‑assemble on ground–Lay out all parts to identify hoppers, nipples, pipes, brackets, and seals.

Feeder Installation&Assembly

Type A:Hanging Pan Feeder(most common)

Assemble the hopper body–Snap or screw the two halves(if split).Insert the anti‑waste grill over the pan.

Attach the suspension kit–Thread the metal hooks or ropes through the hopper’s top eyelets.Ensure all chains are equal length(adjust by moving chain links up/down on the central ring).

Mount the hanging point–Screw a heavy‑duty eye bolt into a ceiling joist or rafter.Hang the feeder using the central ring. The pan should sit 10–15 cm(4–6 inches)above the litter.

Set the feed level adjuster–Most pan feeders have a rotating dial or a sliding plate inside the drop tube.Start at the middle setting.Rotate clockwise for larger gap(pellets),counter‑clockwise for smaller gap(mash/crumbles).

Fill with dry feed–Pour slowly to avoid bridging.Tap the side of the hopper to settle the feed.

Test flow–Push down on the pan edge(simulating a bird pecking).Feed should trickle into the pan.If none comes out, open the adjuster one notch. If it overflows, close it slightly.

Type B:Trough/Linear Feeder

Mount the trough–Attach wall brackets every 60 cm(2 ft).Ensure the trough is level(use a spirit level). For floor mounting, screw into a 2x4 wooden base to keep it stable.

Install the rain cover–For outdoor use, hinge or clip on a transparent or metal lid.The lid should overhang the trough by at least 2 cm(0.8 inches).

Add divider grilles(optional)–Insert metal or plastic dividers every 30 cm(12 inches)to reduce feed pulling and waste.

Backfill with hopper–If using an automatic fill hopper, mount the storage bin above the trough.Connect with a downspout(PVC pipe 75–100 mm diameter).Use a slide gate at the bin outlet to control flow.

Drinker Installation&Assembly

Type A:Nipple Drinker Line

Prepare the pipe–Use schedule 40 PVC(½inch or¾inch)or food‑grade polytube.Cut to length.Deburr the edges.

Drill holes–Mark equidistant points(every 30–45 cm/12–18 inches for chickens,every 20 cm for quail).Drill a hole exactly perpendicular using a nipple‑drill bit(size specified by nipple manufacturer–typically 9/32 inch or 7 mm).Clean plastic shavings.

Tap the threads–For threaded nipples, run the appropriate NPT tap into each hole. For push‑fit nipples(most common),no tapping needed.

Insert nipples–Screw in by hand, then tighten¼turn with a wrench.Do not overtighten(cracks the pipe).Apply one layer of Teflon tape at the base for a watertight seal. For push‑fit, simply push in until the O‑ring seats.

Add a pressure regulator and filter–Connect the supply hose to a pressure reducer(set to 0.3–0.8 psi)then to a 100‑mesh inline filter.Connect filter to the pipe’s inlet.

Cap the far end–Install a flush valve(ball valve)or simply a glued end cap.If using a flush valve, leave it slightly open for air to escape during filling.

Mount the line–Use pipe clips/saddles screwed to a wooden batten.Keep the pipe perfectly level(critical for even water dispensing).Height:bottom of nipple at bird eye level.

Install catch cups–Snap cups under each nipple to catch drips.Ensure they do not touch the floor(leave 2–3 cm gap).

Flush and test–Open the main water valve.Let water run out the far end until no air bubbles appear.Close the flush valve. With a finger, push each nipple pin upward–a small drop should form immediately. If water streams, pressure is too high.If nothing comes out,the nipple is blocked(poke with a toothpick).

Type B:Bell/Plasson Drinker

Assemble the valve–Screw the float arm onto the valve body.Attach the rubber diaphragm to the bottom of the float.Ensure the pin moves freely.

Attach the base–Snap or screw the transparent bell onto the base plate. The bell should seal tightly without gaps.

Install the grommet–Push the rubber grommet into the hole at the center of the base.Insert the valve stem through it from above. The grommet keeps water from leaking around the stem.

Connect water supply–Attach a hose or PVC pipe to the valve inlet.Use a shut‑off valve nearby for cleaning.

Set height–Hang the drinker using chains so the rim of the base is 2–3 cm(1 inch)above the birds’backs. For chicks, lower temporarily.

Test–Open water. The float should rise and shut off the valve when the water reaches about 2 cm depth in the base.If it overflows, bend the float arm slightly downward.

Final Common Steps(Feeders&Drinkers)

Sanitize before use–Wipe all surfaces with a 10%bleach solution, then rinse thoroughly.

Observe birds for 1 hour–Watch for hesitant birds.Adjust height if birds have to stretch or squat.

Check daily for first week–Look for leaks, blocked nipples, bridging in feeders, and level adjustments.
